Advancing surgical training through scalable simulation technology

As modern medicine reaches new frontiers, training for surgeons remains rooted in the past. The majority of surgeons continue to learn in an apprenticeship style of see one, do one, teach one. The associated learning curve is not only time-consuming, it’s risky. A study published in 2024 in the Annals of Surgery found patients undergoing operations by a first-year surgeon are 17% more likely to die compared to those treated by a surgeon with 15 years of experience. The study also found 9% of patients are more likely to suffer severe complications. Compounding the issue is a worsening shortage of surgeons. The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts surgeons will make up as much as 74% of a national shortage of physicians in 2036.

With its suite of advanced simulation technologies, Inovus Medical is solving surgery’s training challenge, enabling clinicians to train safely, efficiently and at scale. The company’s suite of hyper-real surgical simulators replicates real procedures using augmented reality, computer vision and AI. Powered by its proprietary Totum® platform, Inovus Medical’s training programs combine real-feel haptics with in-depth feedback to help surgeons — both new and old — connect practice to procedure in the pursuit of skills mastery.
